Lands’ End Steinem Interview Withdrawal Exacerbates Marketing Fiasco
Land’s End marketing communication efforts have always been a source of bemused entertainment for me. They are too clever for their own good. Now, they’ve inadvertently alienated one side of a hot-button issue by printing the Lands’ End Steinem interview. And by subsequently withdrawing the Lands’ End Steinem interview, they’ve alienated those on the other side of it, which effectively doubles the damage. This has its analog in actual sales. To wit, the ideologues in charge of sourcing skirts & cardigans for “private, religious schools” are not going to resume patronizing Lands’ End by virtue of the withdrawal, while people on the other side of the issue might eschew Lands’ End for an apparent lack of conviction when it comes to free speech & press. And BTY, fiasco is an Italian word.
